LoFi Sunday #40: Glitchy Metroid-Fi (Teenage Engineering PO-33 KO)

video upload by Josh Is Making Music

"I finished Metroid Dread yesterday, and absolutely loved it. I'm a long time Metroid fan, so I figured I ought to bring that into a beat. I took a sample of the 'Phendrana Drifts' theme from Metroid Prime and made a kinda lofi/glitchy beat with it. I hope you enjoy, and if you do, don't forget to leave a like! If you're already subscribed, thanks for coming back! And if you aren't, please consider subscribing to help support the channel and see more videos like this, as well as beatmaking videos and gear discussions. Thanks so much!"

What The Heck Is A Moog/Realistic MG-1?

LoFi Sunday #15: Hopeful (Roland SP-404SX and Moog MG-1)
video by Josh Is Making Music

"I picked up a Moog/Realistic Concertmate MG-1 off of Facebook marketplace, and while I plan on doing a larger video exploring it, I couldn't help but play around with it for a lofi jam. The SP-404SX has become one of my favorite music-making platforms, and for this song, I'm adding reverb to the MG-1 with the 404. The chord patterns and bassline were sampled from the Korg Prologue. If you're already subscribed, thanks for coming back! And if you're not already subscribed and you enjoyed this video, please consider subscribing to help support the channel. Thanks!"

"Portable Audio Workstation KDJ-ONE Funded on Kickstarter for Release Next Summer

~XY Pad added as $150,000 stretch goal~

CyberStep, Inc. (based in Tokyo, Japan) is proud to announce that its portable music creation & live performance device, the KDJ-ONE, was successfully funded on Kickstarter. The KDJ-ONE will go into production and ship to backers in 2015.

KDJ-ONE on Kickstarter

From Production to Performance, the KDJ-ONE has it covered

The KDJ-ONE comes loaded with all of the basic tools you need to get started making music. To start, the Synthesizer allows you to create virtually any sound you can think of. Plotting these sounds on the Sequencer’s intuitive piano roll interface will let you start putting your song together, note by note. External audio interfaces can be linked to the device via USB connection and the Line IN port can be hooked up to a microphone or an iPhone’s mic app. Trimming and balancing is easily done once recording has been completed. Finished tracks may be put together for a live set using the KDJ-ONE’s Song mode, in which a number of effects can be applied.
It comes loaded with various patterns by top artists such as Sid Wilson from the world acclaimed metal band Slipknot, as well as leading composers from the game industry such as Yasunori Mitsuda, Hiroki Kikuta, and also Takeshi Yokemura from the chip-tune band YMCK. The KDJ-ONE will also feature not only patterns but preset sounds created by leading sound designers such as Davide Carbone and Josh Abrahams, both who were involved in projects with Carl Cox and Kylie Minogue, and Katsunori Ujiie who worked on sound design for many of the Yamaha synthesizers.

XY Pad added as $150,000 stretch goal!

With the Kickstarter campaign still going strong, CyberStep has added a $150,000 stretch goal to secure additional funding. If reached, the KDJ-ONE will be released with XY Pad functionality, enabling yet

another level of control over the sound produced with the device. While the XY Pad is primarily oriented towards live performances, it also presents an intuitive control method for beginners to easily visualize how to use the functions such as the modulator or synthesizer."

Quantimator Prototype: Prototype #3

flickr By g.p.macklin
"The third Toppobrillo Quantimator prototype was brought to life today. Between Bret, Josh, and myself we should be able to narrow down all of the bugs fairly fast. Let the bug squashing begin! Now the hardest part is going to be resisting the urge to write music. The Quantimator is really musical as soon as it is plugged into a patch and naturally it wants to be used in that context. It makes me want to play with it and not test for firmware issues. Hmm, I guess making some demos would be a way of working while playing.

So anyhow the image above is an arpeggio patch using the Quantimator with a Fonitronik Sequential Switch. The switch cycles between three notes which are output to an oscillator's pitch input. Modulating the chord selection with a control voltage adds a slight variation to the arpeggio.

Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog Exibition Updates

"Exhibition features Keith Emerson's Legendary “Monster Moog” Modular Synthesizer through October 18th, 2009

CARSLBAD, CA/ASHEVILLE, NC – The Museum of Making Music (Carlsbad, CA), in partnership with the Bob Moog Foundation, has opened Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog exhibition, to run through April 30, 2010. The exhibit is the first of its kind, marking the first public display of the artifacts from Bob Moog’s archives and an examination of the impact of his work on the world of music.

MONSTER MOOG INSTALLATION
On August 30th, Keith Emerson's (Emerson, Lake and Palmer, The Nice) mammoth “Monster Moog” modular synthesizer was added to the exhibit after it was featured the previous evening in a musical celebration of the exhibit opening by Emerson and Erik Norlander. Emerson used this remarkable instrument on numerous recordings over the past 40 years, including his solo in “Lucky Man” (1969), possibly the most popular synth solo in history. He also used the synthesizer on countless world tours and is generally credited with pioneering the use of the Moog modular as a touring musician.

The “Monster Moog” began as a modest system, but grew over time as Emerson
requested that Moog create custom additions for his touring instrument, including extra modules, custom sample-and-hold, and several pre-sets, an innovative addition for that time. The synthesizer grew into a massive cabinet of five sections and over 75 modules. It stands more than four feet above its special base – almost 8 feet high. Its sound is noticeably clearer and stronger than any other keyboard Emerson plays – it is an instrument of significance and legend, and arguably the most famous synthesizer of all time.

Bob Moog and Keith Emerson enjoyed a special relationship of toolmaker and musician that grew in to a lifelong friendship. Moog is noted for listening to musician's needs and technical specifications which he then used to improve his instruments: This dynamic is explored throughout the Waves exhibit.

Keith Emerson on KORG OASYS and Moog's Waves of Inspiration Opening

This one in via Josh of Big City Music who reminds us Keith will be playing at the upcoming Moog Museum Waves of Inspiration opening today!

"The opening weekend (August 29 -31) will kick off with a launch of the Moog exhibition featuring an intimate musical performances by Keith Emerson and Erik Norlander and talks by Larry Fast and Brian Kehew."

via the Museum of Making Music.
"On August 29 at 6 PM, the public is invited to view the new exhibition "Waves of Inspiration: The Legacy of Moog," and enjoy the music of The Volt Per Octaves during a wine & cheese reception. Following the reception, the museum presents a demonstration with Keith Emerson and music by Erik Norlander. Emerson, the personification of the Moog legacy and maverick of the Moog synthesizer, will demonstrate his “Monster Moog” modular system. Norlander is a prolific artist who pushes the Moog tradition into the future with an evocative synthesizer technique. His perpetual live use of vintage instruments—Moog synthesizers in particular—give his performances a depth of sound seldom seen. Don't miss this memorable evening!

Musicrow Vintage Strings MkIII

"Vintage Strings MkIII is a new super realistic virtual string machine that perfectly recreates the lush sound of analog string machines.

The string machine (also called string ensemble or string synth) was invented by ken freeman in 1970 as an attempt to replicate the sound of orchestral strings. It was so successful that it shortly became beloved instrument in its own right.

The distinctive sound of vintage string machines like the Arp Solina or the Crumer Performer can be heard on numerous music productions. It has been used by various musicians like: Pink Floyd, Air, Beck, The Eagles, Kraftwerk, The Cure, Joy Division, Josh Wink, Morrisey, Tangerine Dream, Keane, Japan, and New Order to name few.

Like these old machines, Vintage Strings MkIII is a synthesizer that was especially designed to produce rich warm string pads. It make no use samples, so any of its presets can be tweaked, and new ones can be easily created, making Vintage Strings MkIII as user friendly as it is toneful.

And now, The third version of Vintage Strings presents various new features that expand its sound capabilities and make it even better:

- The color control in the timbre section enables the creation of new beautiful choirs and pad sounds.
- In the envelope section you can now choose the analog envelope mode, for an accurate emulation of vintage string machines envelopes.
- The reverb section was completely revamped and now enables you to select between a smooth studio reverb and an authentic spring reverb.
- The new 7th buttons enables each strings section to play seven notes above the original pitch, for thicker string sounds.
- New user interface.

If you desire the classic sound of analog strings machines, don't miss Vintage Strings MkIII!"

SEARCH /Broadcasting Tijuana Electronic Music to outer space

YouTube via pepemogt.

"Manglano-Ovalle transformed the bullfight ring of Tijuana located at the border in to a Radio telescope searching for "aliens". He suspended an antenna above the building and a receiving dish below, Live Electronic Music was brodcasted in the building, on the web, FM radio and into space. This project makes reference to the social situation of Mexican "Aliens".

In the video Pepe Mogt(Latinsizer, Fussible, Nortec), Ramon Bostich(nortec Collective) and Leslie(Dream addictive) were making music with digital and analog sequencers and synths(Arp Odyssey, Oberheim), the audio out of this machines was sent to Manglano-Ovalle Transmiter in real time in to outer space.

info about synths used:
The ARP Odyssey was and still is a very popular synth because it is a powerful lightweight version of the awesome ARP 2600. It was also ARP's response to the Minimoog and the Odyssey became the most popular synth ARP ever sold! The Odyssey is a 2-oscillator analog synth (with duophonic capability) which sounds really nice; the Minimoog has 3 oscillators and is considered fatter. The Odyssey comes well equipped with all the tweakable features you'd expect: resonant low pass filter, ADSR envelopes, sine or square wave LFO and even a sample-and-hold function. It also added a few new features such as a highpass filter in series with the lowpass, oscillator sync capability and pulse width modulation. It is a very professional and expressive machine that can create nice analog basses, interesting leads and great effects and sweeping sounds or noises!

There were many versions of the Odyssey over the years, each a little different. Pictured above is the Odyssey I (Model 2800). These original white-faced Odysseys used a tinny 2-pole VCF filter design (Model 4023) similar to old Oberheim SEM modules. They also used a rotary knob for pitch bending. These models were produced between 1972-74. Odysseys have been used by ABBA, Bomb The Bass, Ultravox, Gary Numan, LTJ Bukem, Air, Tangerine Dream, 808 State, Apollo 440, Nine Inch Nails, Astral Projection, Chick Corea, George Duke, Josef Zawinul, John Foxx, Vangelis, Elton John, Latinsizer, Jethro Tull, Fussible, Nortec Collective, Jimmy Edgar, DEVO, R.E.M. and Herbie Hancock

TR-808
The TR-808 is a classic drum machine that used analog synthesis to create its sounds. The sounds have a very thin and pure quality and aren't grungy like it's successor the TR-909. In fact, the 808 has become the signature beatbox used in most R&B and hip-hop as well as a lot of dance and techno music. Booming bass kicks, crispy snares and that annoying cowbell sound made famous during the 80's are all part of the 808 and its famous sound.

Its 16 drum sounds include the famous boomy low kick, snappy snares, low/mid/hi toms, low/mid/hi congas, rimshot, claves, hand clap, maracas, cowbell, cymbal, open hihat, closed hihat and accent. All of the sounds can be edited and/or tuned and have individual outputs. Unfortunately it is not MIDI equipped but it does use Roland's DIN Sync.

The TR-808 was OK in its time. It just didn't sound like real drums. When the Linn Drum machines appeared, the 808 seemed doomed. But its unique sound and analog allure have found it a long-lasting home in many forms of music. Clearly the 808 has been one of the more important and famous drum machines in the history of music, spawning imitators (ReBirth, DrumStation) and band names (808 State). Famous users include Orbital, Uberzone, Download, Aphex Twin, 808 State, BT, Bomb The Bass, Sense Datum, The Prodigy, Josh Wink, Faithless, Skinny Puppy, Bushflange, Jimi Tenor, A Guy Called Gerald, Eat Static, Dr. Dre, Jimmy Edgar, Nortec Collective, Freddy Fresh, Richie Hawtin, Jean Michel Jarre, Cocteau Twins, Bostich, Marvin Gaye, Latinsizer, Luke Vibert, Ice Cube and Puff Daddy."
